I don't think he was lying, I think he meant that no matter how much you hurt, get hurt, etc.-- to keep loving. To not harden yourself against the disappointments of love, but rather, work to keep yourself open to it.
I don't think he meant sacrifice yourself over and over for the same person who keeps abusing your love.
